What is Instagram Reels and Stories?
Instagram Reels and Stories work as a two-part system for a young business. Reels are short vertical videos that Instagram recommends to people who don’t follow you yet, so they bring in strangers. Stories are 24-hour posts that sit at the top of your followers’ screens, so they speak to people who already know you. One fills the room, the other has the conversation.
The bridge between them is the DM keyword prompt: Comment GUIDE and I’ll send it to you. Every comment turns into a private message thread, and a private thread is where an Instagram follower turns into a customer.
When should you use it?
Use it when:
- You sell to consumers or solo business owners, and your product or service looks good on camera: food, fashion, beauty, fitness, coaching, home goods, local services.
- Your buyers already DM small brands to ask about sizes, prices or availability.
- You can give it 4 weeks with 3 Reels and 4 or 5 Stories days per week.
Skip it if your buyers are corporate teams who never open Instagram for work, or if you have nothing visual to show and no face willing to talk to camera.
How do you do it, step by step?
-
Switch to a professional account and fix your bio. Instagram gives you 150 characters for a bio. Use them for who you help, what you deliver and one call to action: Postpartum strength coach. 20-minute home workouts. Free 7-day plan below. Put your link in the profile and point it at ONE page with ONE offer, ideally a lead magnet or a waitlist.
-
Plan Reels for strangers. Each Reel answers one question your buyer types or asks a friend. Open with the problem on screen in the first second, keep it 15 to 45 seconds, add captions. Instagram only recommends Reels of 3 minutes or less to non-followers, so short is safe. Write 12 Reel ideas before filming, 3 per week for 4 weeks.
-
Test new ideas as trial reels. With a professional account you can switch on the Trial toggle before sharing. Instagram then shows the Reel to non-followers first, and after about 24 hours you see views, likes, comments and shares. Share the winners with followers; let the duds quietly fade.
-
Add a keyword to every second Reel. End with Comment PLAN and I’ll DM you the 7-day plan. Reply by hand at first, or set up a comment-to-DM automation in ManyChat, whose free plan covers keyword triggers. Your DM: thank them, send the link, then ask ONE question (What’s the hardest part of working out at home right now?). Their answers are free customer research.
-
Use Stories for warm followers. Post 3 to 6 frames on Stories days. Mix a poll sticker (Which is harder: finding time or finding energy?), a question sticker (Ask me anything about pelvic floor recovery), a behind-the-scenes frame and, once a week, a link sticker to your offer. Everyone who taps a poll is a warm lead you can reply to by DM.
-
Save your best Stories as Highlights. Make 4 Highlights: Start here, Results, FAQ, Offer. New visitors from a Reel check these before they follow or buy.
-
Track it weekly in Meta Business Suite. Note per Reel: reach to non-followers, shares, saves, follows. Per week: DM conversations started, link clicks, sign-ups, sales. Shares and saves tell you what strangers found useful; DMs tell you who is ready to talk about buying.
What does a worked example look like?
Say Priya is a physiotherapist who wants to sell an online postpartum strength program for €49. She has 600 followers, mostly friends.
Her first Reel shows her lying on the floor with a baby on her chest, text on screen: Can’t do a sit-up 3 months after birth? Don’t. Do this instead. She demonstrates 2 safe moves in 25 seconds and ends with Comment PLAN for the free 7-day plan. She posts it as a trial reel first. It reaches 9,000 non-followers and gets 210 comments with PLAN.
Each commenter gets an automatic DM with the plan and the question about home workouts. 64 people reply. The word guilt comes up 19 times (guilt about taking time for herself), so her next 3 Reels are about 10-minute sessions during nap time.
On Stories she runs a poll every Tuesday and a question box every Thursday, and on day 21 she posts a link sticker to a founding member offer: the program at €29 for the first 30 women. She sells 22 spots, 17 of them to women who had DMed her earlier.

What mistakes should you avoid?
- Treating Stories like a second feed. Stories are for talking to people who already like you. Ask, poll, show the mess behind the scenes. Polished ads in Stories get skipped.
- Using a link page with 9 buttons. Visitors from a Reel decide in seconds, so send them to a single page with a single next step.
- Sending a sales pitch as the first DM. Give what you promised, then ask a question. Sell in the third or fourth message, after you know their problem.
- Measuring likes. Likes come from people who already follow you. Shares and saves from non-followers show whether the Reel reached anyone new.
- Never selling. Four weeks of free value with no offer teaches followers that you are a free channel. Put a link sticker to the offer in Stories at least once a week.
How do you know it worked?
Count DM conversations and the people who buy or sign up from them. Our rule of thumb for 4 weeks: GO if at least 2 Reels reached more non-followers than your follower count AND you started 30 or more real DM conversations, with some converting to sign-ups or sales. NO-GO if Reels stall below 500 non-follower views each after 12 tries and nobody uses your keyword. Rework the first second of your Reels first, then test the same ideas as TikTok short videos to see whether the problem is the platform or the message.
What should you do next?
Send everyone who comments your keyword into a welcome email sequence so the conversation survives the 24-hour Story window. When one Reel format clearly works, pay creators to make it about you through micro-influencer outreach. FAQ
What is the difference between Instagram Reels and Stories?
Reels stay on your profile and get recommended to people who don’t follow you, so they bring reach. Stories disappear after 24 hours and mostly reach your existing followers, so they build trust and start conversations.
Can I add a link to an Instagram Story?
Yes. Use the link sticker from the sticker tray, paste your URL and place the sticker on the frame. Instagram made the link sticker available to all accounts, though new accounts and accounts that break its rules may not get it.
How long should an Instagram Reel be?
Start with 15 to 45 seconds. Instagram only recommends Reels of up to 3 minutes to people who don’t follow you, and short Reels make it easier for viewers to watch to the end.
