Method 72 of 100 · Stage 8: Grow on social media and in communities

TikTok Short Videos

Post short problem and behind-the-scenes videos built for TikTok search, then double down on the formats that bring profile visits.

What is TikTok Short Videos?

TikTok short videos for a startup are 15 to 60 second clips that show the problem you solve, how you make your product, or how a customer uses it, posted on a steady rhythm so TikTok can figure out who to show them to. Your follower count barely matters at the start. TikTok’s For You feed shows videos to people who do not follow you, so a brand-new account has a shot at reaching strangers from its very first clip.

The second half of the method is TikTok search. People type questions straight into the TikTok search bar (how to stop my dog eating too fast), and videos that say and show those words get found for months. So each clip has two jobs: hook the person scrolling, and answer the person searching.

When should you use it?

It fits when:

  • You sell to consumers, especially a physical product you can show in action, or a service with a visible before and after.
  • Your buyers are under 45, or the problem has a lively hobby crowd (pets, skincare, cooking, crafts, fitness, personal finance).
  • You can film on your phone 2 or 3 times a week without dreading it.

Skip it for slow B2B sales to procurement teams, or anything you cannot show on screen. A tax-compliance API for banks will not find buyers here; LinkedIn founder posts suit that better.

How do you do it, step by step?

  1. Research search terms inside TikTok. Type your problem into the search bar and write down every autocomplete suggestion. Open the top 10 videos for each and copy the phrases in the comments: wait, which bowl is this? or does it work for big dogs? Those comments are your next videos. Also check the trending hashtags and songs in the free TikTok Creative Center.

  2. Pick 3 formats and stick to them for 3 weeks. Problem POV: show the frustration your buyer lives with, then the fix. Behind the scenes: packing orders, testing prototypes, a failed batch. Answer a comment: TikTok lets you reply to a comment with a video, which shows the question on screen and gives you an endless source of topics.

  3. Script the first 2 seconds before anything else. Open on motion and a text overlay that names the viewer or the problem: If your dog finishes dinner in 9 seconds, watch this. No logo intro, no hi guys, no slow pan. Say the search phrase out loud in the first 5 seconds and put it in the on-screen text and the caption. That is how TikTok search matches you.

  4. Batch film, then edit in CapCut. Film 6 clips in one session with natural light and the phone at eye level. Keep them 20 to 40 seconds while you learn. Add captions (plenty of people scroll with the sound off), cut every pause, and end on a loop or a question that invites a comment.

  5. Post daily for 3 weeks at test times. Pick 2 posting windows and alternate them. The PostHour planner for TikTok posting times gives sensible starting windows and a two-week test template, and then your own analytics take over. If you use a business account, music comes from TikTok’s Commercial Music Library, which is cleared for business use.

  6. Reply to every comment in the first hour. Pin the comment that asks the best question. Turn the 3 most common questions into answer videos the next day.

  7. Read the numbers every Sunday. In TikTok analytics, open each video and note: average watch time, percentage who watched the full video, profile views, link clicks. Sort by profile views. Those are the videos that made strangers curious about you.

What does a worked example look like?

Say Jade designs slow-feeder dog bowls, made in small batches by a ceramics studio. She has a simple shop page and 0 followers.

Her TikTok search shows dog eats too fast, dog throwing up after eating, slow feeder for big dogs. She films 6 clips on a Saturday. The first one opens with her Labrador inhaling dinner from a steel bowl, text on screen: 9 seconds. That’s how long dinner lasted. Cut to the same meal in her bowl: 4 minutes. She says dog eats too fast in the first sentence.

That video gets 30,000 views and 140 comments, mostly does it work for flat-faced dogs? She answers with a video of a friend’s pug. Week 2, she posts a behind-the-scenes clip of a cracked batch coming out of the kiln, and it pulls the most profile views of the month because people want to know if the bowls are handmade.

After 3 weeks: 21 videos, 2 that clearly worked, 38 orders traced to a discount code she only mentioned on TikTok. She drops the packing videos (low watch time) and makes the “answer a comment” format her main one.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Polishing like an ad. Over-produced clips look like ads, and people scroll past ads. Phone footage in real light wins trust.
  • Burying the point. If the problem is not on screen in second 1 or 2, most viewers are gone.
  • Judging a format after 3 videos. One clip says almost nothing. Give each format at least 6 to 8 tries before you drop it.
  • Ignoring search words. A funny clip with no searchable phrase gets a short burst of views and then disappears.
  • No path to buy. If your profile has no clear line about what you sell and where to get it, curious viewers leave with nothing to click.

How do you know it worked?

Watch profile views, link clicks and sales or sign-ups you can trace (a TikTok-only code or a tracked link). Our rule of thumb after 3 weeks of daily posting: GO if at least 2 videos reached well beyond your followers AND you can trace real orders or sign-ups to TikTok. Keep going and repeat what those 2 videos did. NO-GO if average watch time stays under a third of the video length across 20 clips. Rework your hooks first; if that fails, your buyers may not be on TikTok and Instagram Reels or YouTube how-to videos deserve the effort instead.

What should you do next?

Repost your best clips as Instagram Reels and cut the long answers into YouTube how-to videos. Once you know which format sells, hand it to creators through micro-influencer outreach so other people make videos about you too. FAQ

How many times a day should a new account post on TikTok?

Once a day is plenty for a new account and easy to keep up for 3 weeks. Posting 3 times a day spreads your effort thin and lowers the quality of each clip. Consistency is what lets you compare formats fairly.

Do I need a business account on TikTok?

A business account gives you analytics and business tools, and it limits you to music cleared for commercial use, which protects you from copyright problems. If you sell something, a business account is the safe choice.

How long should a TikTok video be for a startup?

Start with 20 to 40 seconds: long enough to show a problem and a fix, short enough for people to watch to the end. Answer videos and tutorials can run longer once you see people finishing your shorter clips.
